THE National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) yesterday organised a dry run as preparations for any eventuality of a disaster occurring in and around Kg Ayer.

The event examined the possibility of having to evacuate residents from Mukim Saba in Kg Ayer to Dewan Muhibbah at the Brunei-Muara District Office at Jalan Airport Lama.

The drill is one of the efforts initiatied by the NDMC towards improving and enhancing the nation's capacity for handllng natural disasters.

It is also aimed at ensuring that the preparedness levels of the public and the coordination between agencies are at full capacity and is working at its best.

The exercise was also to provide guidelines to the residents on what exactly needs to be carried out in order for them to be prepared in the event of a disaster. Such practices are timely and necessary to keep up to date the preparedness of all levels of emergency services.

The exercise was carried out with the cooperation of the Fire and Rescue Department, Brunei-Muara District Office, Royal Brunei Police Force, Emergency Medical Services, Health Services Department, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Information Department, Department of Civil Aviation and others.

The NDMC is responsible for the safety and well-being of all residents during a natural disaster and is responsible for coordinating the relief work from all agencies involved. At the moment, with the country experiencing a dry spell, forest fires and bush fires are at the top of the list of natural disasters.The Brunei Times
