HIS Majesty is the fundamental pillar in the development of this country be it economic, social, education or religion, said the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports yesterday.

"With his leadership, we have achieve tremendous development and progress. His Majesty has a far reaching vision for the country and people to further progress." said Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah on the sidelines of the monarch's 66th birthday celebration at Taman Hj Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien in the capital.

Asked how the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports can help realise His Majesty's vision, YB Pehin Dato Hj Hazair said His Majesty's concern for the welfare of his people has inspired the ministry to work harder.

Social development, culture and welfare is essential for the country and people to progress, Pehin Dato Hj Hazair said.

The minister also spoke of the status of culture in the country. "Culture is the soul of the nation. Inculcating Brunei culture to the young generation is very important.Youth development is essential to the country. To make the youth an asset, they must be seen as progressive and contribute (to the nation) not a burden."

The spirit of youth was showcased with the participation of the Program Khidmat Bakti Negara (PKBN) or National Service Scheme graduates in the celebration.

It was the second time that PKBN participated in a national celebration, the first was during the 28th National Day. Wearing blue and gray uniforms, the graduates, joined the march alongside army cadets, police cadets, fire and rescue cadets, Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association (PPNBD) and Brunei Darussalam Girl Guides Association among others.
