YOUTHS not only play a huge part in making the Ramah Mesra pantomime performance at the Temburong Community field a success, but they also participate in the event as representatives of non-government organisation representatives, cadets and volunteers.
Speaking to The Brunei Times, Red Cross member and Year 11 student from Sultan Hassan Secondary School (SHSS), Nur SyaSya Syafiqah Abdullah Bunda said she has been a regular at this kind of event.
"I usually participate at least twice every year in events like Maulidur Rasul and the National Day celebrations," she said.
"I've been involved as a Red Cross member for five years," she added, noting that her role involves "helping out the hospital staff who are posted at the event's first aid station and to observe how they do their work".
She said that her duties include providing assistance to those who have fainted; handing out medicinal creams to people experiencing cramps; cleansing the wounds of the injured; and handing out water to visitors to help keep them hydrated.
"We tend to come across visitors with minor injuries during these events," she said, "so I hope the public can take better care of themselves to avoid injuries."
Meanwhile, a police cadet from SHSS, Nurhafizah Ibrahim, said that her roles during the Ramah Mesra event involved bearing the national flag to the field in the customary 'cadet' march.
"It's a way for us to show our respect to the visiting monarch," she said, "and to show our courtesy as police cadets".
She added that "being part of this event is quite fun seeing that this is my first time to be here as a cadet".
"I've been a police cadet for just about a year and it is an interest that I've inherited from my father," she explained.
Her cousin and schoolmate, Asliana Degat, was also another police cadet joining in the event yesterday.
"I think the performance has improved from the previous year," Asliana said.
"It's much more appealing and portrays village life in the past," she added. "It is about telling the history of Brunei to the spectators." The Brunei Times
