Temporary body to promote green buildings established

Saturday, August 18, 2012

THE Brunei Green Building Council is still awaiting government approval but has formed a pro tempore committee to spearhead operations.

Dr William Voon (pictured), honorary chairman of the Institution of Engineering and Technology in Brunei, said the pro tem committee will be led by Dato Paduka Hj Idris Hj Abas, CEO of Arkitek Idris.

"The aim of the council is to promote green building and the conservation of energy. What they're focusing on now is green buildings." Brunei aims to be part of the World Green Building Council in order to keep up-to-date with green building technologies.

The council also intends to establish its own green building index to categorise its designs.

"We try to talk to the government ... but the question is we need someone from the government to be the owner of this," Dr Voon told The Brunei Times. "At the moment we are not sure, now that the green council is formed, we have to discuss who will be the authority." That responsibility could fall on the Ministry of Development, suggested Dr Voon.
