HJ ESA Kula's logo design has been chosen to be the winning logo to be used for Brunei's Chairmanship of the ASEAN Summit in 2013.

The winning logo was chosen from a pool of entry submitted for the ASEAN Summit 2013 Logo Competition.

Hj Esa, a Public Relations Officer from the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP), expressed his happiness for the major achievement, which he said happened for the second time.

"I feel happy because this is the second time that my work was chosen. The first time was for the 28th National Day. So Alhamdulillah, I got the first place," he told The Brunei Timesafter receiving the award at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MoFAT) building.

The award came in the form of a certificate of appreciation and $3,000, but Hj Esa explained that his satisfaction comes not from just winning the prize.

"It feels very good to know that my work will be displayed during the ASEAN Summit 2013 in Brunei where it would also be published in the wider media," he said.

He said that the logo, which could not be revealed to the media, took him about two days to complete with the design fully conceptualised within two hours. He added that he drew inspiration from previous ASEAN Summit logos.

He also gave credit to using technology as an aid for the logo which hastened the completion of the logo.

Although he is not a full time artist, Hj Esa said that he had taken up arts during his graduate studies and early career.

"I was a graduate in Fine Arts and for a very long time, have been involved in design. Initially, I started off my career by being an illustrator. I also joined many competitions that were not just about logo designing but also drawing," he said.

His foray into becoming a public relations officer came after completing his Masters Degree in Public Relations.

"But drawing and art is still a hobby for me and when there are competitions, I would still join them," he said.

Presenting the prize to Hj Esa were the Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office and the Permanent Secretary at the MoFAT in their capacities as the secretaries to the National Committee for Brunei Darussalam's Chairmanship of ASEAN 2013.

Meanwhile the logo competition was conducted from July 11 to August 4, 2012.
