BRUNEI literature must be examined critically by fellow writers to strengthen its relevance to our social values, said Minister of Home Affairs during an appreciation dinner organised by the Brunei Darussalam Association of Writers (ASTERAWANI), yesterday.

"We need to examine and reflect on our national literature with seriousness. This task is up to writers who are really willing to raise the level of literature in the country for it to have value," the minister said.

He noticed how publications of short stories and poetry by newspapers and literary anthologies by the Language and Literature Bureau have been on the rise, but unfortunately there has not been adequate critical engagement.

"Critical reception just isn't there for these publications," the minister said adding that the value (of the publications) comes from criticising different aspects of literature.

The minister expressed his confident that the long serving members of ASTERAWANI, especially those holding important roles, will set a good example in terms of leadership and are valuable for the development of literature in the country.

While most members of ASTERAWANI were comfortable being 'veterans' even though leadership has changed throughout their years, they are still considered valuable and important.

"I know the leadership of ASTERAWANI has changed from time to time, I have confidence that those veterans are aware of the need to uphold and maintain the values of the association, which I am sure they will do for its longevity," he said.

"We must look 50 years ahead for ASTERAWANI, not just three to four years. Those who are going to take over the association should carry on the traditions and good practises that are important to literature in this country," he added.

Last night event was to honour thirty members of ASTERAWANI for their valuable contributions.

The guest of honour also presented certificates to the winners of the Short Story Writing Contest organised by the Language and Literature Bureau to commemorate 50th anniversary of the association. The Brunei Times
