BRUNEI Darussalam is enforcing its first Syariah Penal Code six months from now.

In a titah or royal speech during the launch of this year's Knowledge Convention, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam said the Syariah or Islamic laws will be enforced in phases.

His Majesty said the Syariah Penal Code is a “special guidance” from Allah.

“It is because of our need that Allah the Almighty, in all His generosity, has created laws for us, so that we can utilise them to obtain justice.”

The monarch further said that the legislation is “now part of the great history of our nation”.

“The step we are taking does not in any way change our policies,” His Majesty added.

The sovereign said Brunei is always mindful of what can benefit the sultanate in all aspects, including politics, the economy, social and other issues.

“We view others with clear and unhindered vision, without any form of prejudice. In return, we also have the right to expect that others will view Brunei in the same light,” His Majesty said.
