HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday presented scholarships to three recipients under the Sultan's Scholar Scheme of Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah at Istana Nurul Iman.

The scholarships were awarded to Muhd Khairul Kamilin Hj Hamdan, Muhammad Hazmi Rafie Hassan and Mohammad Adiazizi Hj Mohd Mahdi. His Majesty later granted an audience to the recipients, who were accompanied by their respective families.

Muhd Khairul Kamilin completed his A-levels at one of the United Kingdom's leading independent boys' schools, Shrewsbury School, and will be furthering his studies at Pembroke College, Oxford University, in the field of chemistry.

Muhammad Hazmi, who completed his A-levels at Berakas Sixth Form Centre, will be pursuing computing at the Imperial College University of London, while Mohammad Adiazizi will be studying chemical engineering at the University College London, University of London, after completing his A-levels at the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College.

The Sultan's Scholar's level of prestige is comparable to that of the Ministry of Defence's Supreme Commander Scholarship and its exclusivity extends to not more than five recipients at a time.

It is open to Brunei citizens who have achieved not less than three Grade A subjects in their A- levels in one sitting. Priority is given to those who achieve more than three Grade A subjects.

The subjects must be relevant to the course they want to pursue at university level. In the case of a medicine course, the individual is required to achieve Grade A's in science and mathematics.

To be a Sultan's Scholar candidate, the individual must also achieve a Grade A in his or her 'O' level Malay language and a second language, such as English or Arabic.

Those pursuing religious courses are required to obtain the Higher Certificate in Religious Studies, or its equivalent, as well as achieving excellent academic results in not less than seven subjects.

The Sultan's Scholar also considers students who achieve at least 45 points in the International Baccalaureate offered by International School Brunei (ISB).

The scholarship scheme is intended to produce citizens who are knowledgeable and skilful for the long-term benefit of the country. The Sultan's Scholar scheme represents one of the many programmes and schemes under the Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation.

The scheme was first introduced in 2006, where three students were granted the scholarship in 2006 and another three by His Majesty last year.

Also present at the audience were ministers, deputy ministers and senior government officials, The Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation board of directors, the Sultan's Scholar steering committee, along with principals and invited Form Six students.
