Judges to decide Saturday on winners of photo contest

WINNERS of the Photographic Competition 2008 held in conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 62nd birthday celebrations will be determined this Saturday, when the final judging takes place at the first floor of The Mall in Gadong.
The last round of judging will decide the top three winners for the four themes in the competition: Celebrations, Cultural Heritage, People and Environment.
The public will also get the opportunity to view an exhibition showcasing the top 20 pictures for each theme from September 6-8 at The Mall.
Over 2,300 entries were received for the competition, which then saw 699 entries for the Celebrations theme narrowed down to 195 in the first round of judging, 670 for the People theme was cut down to 148, 172 entries on Cultural Heritage were selected from a total of 524 received, and 516 entries on the Environment was shortlisted to 102.
After the second round held last month, 20 entries from each of the four themes were selected.The prize presentation for the winners will be held later this month.
The Photographic Competition is organised by The Brunei Times and the Information Department at the Prime Minister's Office.
The contest offered US$12,000 of prize-money up for grabs. The winners for each category will receive US$1,500, while the first and second runners-up will receive US$1,000 and US$500 respectively. Participants will also get the chance to win the coveted overall Best Photography Award. A special award will be given to the best entry by students of secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
The competition is sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum, Sahid Sdn Bhd, TSL Construction Sdn Bhd and GHK Motors Sdn Bhd. Supporting the nation-wide competition are the Brunei Photographic Society and the Brunei Darussalam Association of Photographers. (NAS1)
