THE Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy Studies (FBEPS) I of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) defeated BMC of Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) 45-29 in the Inter-Faculty basketball tournament at the UBD Sports Complex in Tungku Link, near here, yesterday.

Lim Kok Hui had a game high 14 points for FBEPS I while Lim Kok Shien contributed 13 points.

On the other hand, Choo Yung Jian and Fang Bo Yuan each had 12 points for BMC.

Both teams were neck and neck in the opening half. But consistent scoring by FBEPS I allowed them to open up a 14-5 lead midway through the period.

However, BMC shifted gears towards the end of the quarter to reduce the deficit to within two at 15-17 heading into halftime.

FBEPS I relied on their outside shooting to keep them in the driving seat after the interval.

BMC, meanwhile, never really got into the game as they couldn't execute on offence. They were kept scoreless for five minutes midway through the second half as FBEPS I opened up a 32-21 lead which they never lost as they took victory.

"I think we got lucky as our opponents had an off game especially their main player (Choo). But our defence was good too," said Kok Shien, the playing coach of FBEPS I, who is also the head coach of the UBD basketball team.

Organised by the UBD Basketball Club, this is the first time ITB are participating.

Seven teams are competing in the tournament with Easyway, Faculty of Science (FOS), FBEPS II and Epsilon making up Group A while Group B comprises of BMC, Institute of Medicine (IM) and FBEPS I.

The girls category will see IM, ITB, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) and FBEPS fight it out in a three-on-three competition.

The tournament continues today with FBEPS II taking on Easyway at 4.30pm followed by a girls' match between IM and SHBIE at 5.30pm.

The final is set to take place on Nov 5 at 5.40pm.
