BERNARD LIM split his free throws with one second left in the game to lift Faculty of Science (FOS) to their second consecutive title with a 41-40 victory over Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy Studies (FBEPS) I in the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Basketball Club Inter-Faculty tournament yesterday at the UBD Sports Complex in Tungku Link.
Ng Lit How had tied the game at 40 apiece with two seconds left in the game but Bernard had received the inbounds pass before being fouled by his defender.
"I shot the ball like I normally do. I expected the first attempt to go in. I didnt think too much but I missed the second," said Bernard after the victory.
Yap Chun Ping led all scorers with 15 points and Bernard poured in 11 points. On the other hand, Ng topscored for FBEPS I with 11 points and playing coach, Lim Kok Shien contributed 10 points to a losing cause.
FOS started out with their usual game plan as they were scoring on fastbreaks led by national cager, Yap, as FBEPS I had difficulty keeping up with their pace. In addition, FOS came out playing defence not allowing their opponents to execute on offence as they took a 9-3 lead midway through the first half.
FBEPS I were controlling the boards but were failing to add to the scoreboard. They finally picked up their defence towards the end of the half forcing FOS to commit turnovers as they remained down 10-21 heading into halftime.
FOS were doing well to cover all the driving lanes as FBEPS had good chances on several chances penetrating the hoop but failed to capitalise. The turn in tides occurred when Yap converted his shot off a foul but fell down hard as he sustained a sprain ankle that led to FEBPS Is resurgence despite being down 19-31 at that point.
FBEPS I then applied full court man-to-man pressure defence to try and reduce the deficit. With Yap out of the game, the FOS offence became stagnant as FBEPS controlled the game until the decisive free throw by Bernard towards the end.
"I thought that it was our defence to close down their main players that allowed us to win the match, said Yap. We were depending on our fastbreaks to score and we were quite lucky that we had managed to open a gap large enough to hold on to the win," added Yap.
In the third place playoff, Institute of Medicine (IM) edged Easyway of Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) 42-38. Michael Chan scored 16 points to lead IM and Sky Lim contributed 14 points. On the other hand, Chong Jia Jiun topscored for Easyway with 19 points.
Meanwhile, in the girls three-on-three tournament, FBEPS emerged as champions after completing round-robin matches on Monday. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) took second place while IM followed in third. The only other team that competed in the girls game were ITB.
Present as the guest of honour to give away the prizes to the winners was Mohd Ali Sabri Hj Abang, Extra Curricular Activties Officer of the Student Affairs Section of UBD.
Seven teams competed in the annual tournament organised by the UBD Basketball Club. These are Easyway, Faculty of Science (FOS), FBEPS II, Epsilon, BMC, Institute of Medicine (IM) and FBEPS I.The Brunei Times
