GILR WILDCATS rolled to their fourth straight victory at the expense of Beaver Engineering103-86 in Group B of the regular seven stars category of the LBC Cup last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.
Rey Katipunan finished with 26 points while Ronnel Sugnan contributed 23 points as the GILR Wildcats snapped their opponents' four-game winning run.
Vincent Superio had a game-high 28 points for Beaver Engineering, who also got 13 points from Roland Enriques.
The game was close from the start with the GILR Wildcats getting the upperhand at 24-21 at the end of the first quarter. They kept the momentum midway through the second quarter.
The GILR Wildcats came out strong in the third quarter, staging a 13-3 run in a span of two minutes to extend their lead to 59-42.
Beaver Engineering committed a lot of turnovers as the GILR WIldcats started to run on fastbreaks with Katipunan scoring 14 points to help his team take a commanding lead at 77-58.
"The gelling is there tonight (Tuesday) as can be seen from both our offence and defence. We played it light and easy to ease off the pressure for the win," said Robert Rubillar, assistant coach of the GILR Wildcats.
"Prior to the game we were worried that our opponents are strong but we managed to read their offence through our defence which was key to our victory. We had to stop their main scorer (Superio) and cover him at both ends of the floor which worked well," added Rubillar.
In the second game, tournament favourites Palm Cafe swept through Group A with a 86-65 victory over SOLD.
Geve Leones led Palm Cafe with 23 points while Larry Mayrina topscored for SOLD with 20 points.
The competition continues on Thursday with the all-Malay Liga Bumiputera going up against Morley Movers in Group B at 8.30pm.
The second match will pit Warriors against Pinoy 1st Edition in Group A at 10pm.
