BRUNEI became the proud owner of a new Olympic-size swimming pool when a key was presented to Director of Youth and Sports, Hj Mohamad Penglima Asgar Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah for the Aquatic Centre of the Tutong Sports Complex yesterday.

The centre boasts an international standard 50m pool, a 20x10m children's pool, a 250-seat grandstand, dressing rooms, cafeteria and prayer room.

About B$4.8 million was spent on the building, which started construction on 16th December 2008.

The main difficulty facing the project was making sure that the pool was up to international standards. Yet despite that, it was completed three months ahead of schedule, setting a good example for other development projects to follow.

Completion of the Aquatic Centre is a welcomed addition as it provides another venue for junior swimmers in the sultanate.

Amanda Liew Jia Xin, is one such swimmer. The teenager ecently competed in the 18th Brunei Age Group Swimming Championships, breaking eight national records and snatching 11 gold medals to claim the Best Girl in Group 1 (15-17 years old) award.

Two other prospects are Anderson Lim Chee Wei and Desmond Lee Edward, who both competed in Group 3 (13-14 years old).

The former bagged the age group's Best Boy award by winning five gold, one silver and one bronze while Edward won three gold and four silver medals.
