EMERALD were crowned champions of yesterday's Insurans Islam Taib Intersquad Bowling Tournament after finishing with 3,132 pinfalls in the one-day event.
Sixty-seven pins away was Topaz, who finished as runners-up after a score of 3,065 at the Utama Bowling Centre.
Aquamarine came in third with 2,969 while Ruby rounded off the field of four teams with 2,897.
Emerald's team leader Shameon Tamil said the victory was an unexpected one.
"No, not at all," he said when asked whether he came into the competition expecting to win.
"We had too many challengers and we were not the strongest team here. I am not sure why we won, maybe it was just luck and good team spirit," he added.
Individual awards were also up for grabs, with Ruby's Hj Mohd Fua'ad Iswandi Hj Zaini being named best male player after scoring a game-high 254 while Emerald's Haslia Sapar finished with 192 to be named best female player.
The bank's managing director Hj Osman Hj Mohd Jair presented the trophy to Emerald and bowling balls to Hj Mohd Fua'ad and Haslia.
A total of 73 players competed in the tournament which was first held in 2003, and the organisers said it was a welcome surprise after only expecting 60 players to show up yesterday.
Each of the four teams had nine male and female members.
Emerald also won $150 in prize money, Topaz returned with $100 while Aquamarine and Ruby each took home $50. The Brunei Times
