New champs for President's Cup

MSSSBD edge Ivy League to take home the gold

THE Brunei Darussalam Schools' Sports Council (MSSSBD) ushered in a new era in netball when they edged Ivy League 23-20 to lift the President's Cup at the multipurpose hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas yesterday.

With the victory, the MSSSBD girls successfully avenged their 24-20 loss at the hands of Ivy League who boast Her Royal Highness Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bulqiah in their squad during their first match of the group stage on Friday.

MSSSBD also collected two individual honours when Siti Nurul Nazihah Hj Hassan and Nurzaidah Arbi were awarded Best Defender and Best Player respectively.

Meanwhile second-place Ivy League's Hjh Nurul Ajeerah Abdullah claimed Best Shooter.

Group B's Thunderbird and Fire and Rescue Department battled for third place after losing in the semi-finals against the Group A ladies. Table-toppers Thunderbirds lost 17-23 to MSSSBD, while Ivy League crushed Fire and Rescue Department 30-10.

In their Group B match, both teams battled to a 16-16 scoreline to produce the only draw of the two-day tournament.

However, there would be no stalemate in the battle for third and Thunderbirds stepped up their game to strike down Fire and Rescue Department 26-12 to claim bronze.

Another heavyweight in the local netball scene, Comets, failed to advance when they placed third in Group A with a total of just nine points from five matches.

The comets however have nothing to be ashamed of as both of their losses came from eventual finalists MSSSBD (19-23) and Ivy League (21-28).

Present to award the winners was President of the Brunei Darussalam Netball Association Datin Paduka Hjh Intan Hj Md Kassim. The Brunei Times
