IN THE Men's double final of the recently held Swiber Men's and Ladies' Tennis Doubles Tournament, Martijn Van Haaster and Jeroen Veen beat James Kok and John Foo in a close and exciting encounter. The match which lasted over two hours saw the final score 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.
More than 100 matches were contested in the tournament, which was held from 8-15 January at the Panaga Club, Kuala Belait. The tournament was divided into six categories. Men's Double, Ladies' Double, Trophy Men's Double, Trophy Ladies' Double, Plate Men's Double and Plate Ladies' Double.
The Ladies' double final saw Jackie Kwong and Vivian Lau proved too strong for Melanie and Millie Lau, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
In the Trophy Men's final, after a very close encounter in the first set, Robert Green and Alan Fletcher cruised to a 2-0 win defeating Tim Goodall and Philippe Dupont 7-5, 6-1.
The Trophy Ladies' Final was won by Petra and Erani who defeated Alice Wong and Tracey Lineberry, in a competitive and very close match 6-3, 3-6,10-8.
In the Plate Men's Final, Rommel Escobia and Jojo Manacap defeated Tony Sim and Thangamalai, while the Plate Ladies' Final was won by Catherine Gabites and Jacqui Veen, who got the better of Janet Locke and Wana Gapar.
"The tournament was played in unusual tournament format, many pairs played over four matches, just what was needed after the Christmas break," Said Alan D Fletcher.
Swiber Doubles Open Tennis Tournament of Panaga Club was held for the first time 2009. It was sponsored by Swiber Holdings of Brunei.
