Brunei 'boule' over competition in Miri

THE Brunei 3 petanque team of Mazlan Hj Yahya and Wirna Hj Md Yassin bowled over all competitors to be crowned champions of the Miri Double Open Petanque Tournament 2012, held earlier this week.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, petanque player Mazlan stated that there were as much as 178 teams competing in the tournament which consisted of clubs from the Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei.

"We had four teams from Brunei, the Brunei 2 petanque team also won fourth place, we are quite happy with what we achieved and hope to continue this streak in the Borneo region," said Mazlan.

In the semi-finals, Brunei 2 were beaten by Santubong 2 8-13 while Brunei 3 finished off Bintulu 6 with the score of 13-7.

The Brunei 3 team outclassed Santubong 2 by 13-9 in the final but Bintulu 6 knocked out Brunei 2 for third place with the final scoreline reeding 13-8.

The Brunei 1 team consisted of Nona Rowena Hj Mahmud and Wedy Nurul Suzuna Luon, Brunei 2 team were Hj Mat Rasil Hj Ahmad and Md Amir Hj Safar and the Brunei 4 team were Pg Hj Asmalina Pg Hj Jaya and Badaruddin Hj Murni.

The Brunei 3 team, winning first place won the championship trophy and RM800, second placed Santubong 2 was awarded RM600, third placed Bintulu 6 went home with RM400 and the Brunei 2 team received RM200 with their fourth place finish.

Mazlan stated that their next target would be the Petanque Bintulu Open that would start this March and hopes that his team would be fully prepared with more training and practice.The Brunei Times
