THE BRUNEI Darussalam Petanque Federation (BDPF) aims to organise monthly tournaments after the success that this month's event received.

XYZ2 beat Samsung 13-9 to clinch Sunday's Double Open Petanque Championships at the Petanque Pitch of the Hassanal Bokiah National Sports Complex in Berakas and Adakukesah eased past Bob 3 13-4 to claim third, but it was the good turnout that really got people talking.

The federation's inaugural monthly competition, 34 teams from all four districts saw action a strong response by any account for the sport which has yet to catch on with the Brunei public.

"It was the first time we were organising this monthly tournament and we're happy with the response we were only expecting 30 teams," Mazlan Hj Yahya told The Brunei Times yesterday.

"We're doing this to help promote the sport in Brunei and we hope next month there will be another one maybe a triples category," said the national captain.

"The federation hopes to further develop the sport in Brunei through events like these.

"All four of Brunei's districts were represented. Temburong had three teams but they are players who are based here," he added.

BDPF deputy-president Abdul Ghani DP Hj Ali presented prizes to the winners.

Mazlan pointed out that the idea for the one-day tournament came from the good feedback that the sport garnered at last month's Inter-Ministry Sports Festival where petanque was contested for the first time at the annual multi-sport event.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports won three gold medals in the men's event while the Ministry of Health took home gold in three women's categories and another in the mixed triple event.

"We decided to host this event because of the good support we got at the Inter-Ministry Sports Festival," said Mazlan, a multi-titled national.

Mazlan and Wirna Hj Md Yassin were crowned champions of the Miri Double Open Petanque Tournament 2012 held straight after the Inter-Ministry Sports Festival, no mean feat considering there were nearly 180 teams from the Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei competing in the tournament.

Playing under the banner of Brunei 3, they won the championship trophy and RM800.

Mazlan and Wirna saw off Santubong 2 by 13-9 in the final, though the Sultanate was denied another team on the podium when Bintulu 6 defeated Brunei 2 by a 13-8 scoreline to clinch bronze.

Speaking during yesterday's interview, Mazlan stated the national team is eyeing a competition in Sarikei, Sawarak, for their next international outing next month. The Brunei Times
