HOCKEY fans will be treated to some stick action soon.

The Under-23 Hockey League 2012 is set to begin next Friday.

Organised by the Brunei Darussalam Hockey Association (BDHA), the managers meeting and competition draw was held yesterday at the Coaching and Development Unit in Berakas.

Present to chair the meeting was Mansor Hj Ibrahim, the vice-president of BDHA.

The main aim of the tournament is to select players to represent the Sultanate at the 5th Borneo Games next year.

Potential players will be inserted into the Department of Youth and Sports' training scheme before selection for the National Under-23 hockey team.

Six teams Brunei-Muara, Belait, Tutong, Temburong, MTSSR (Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College), Hoki Kitani Club and Schools' Sports Council are fighting for top honours.

Each team is also allowed to have six players above the age of 23 but only four are allowed to be on the field each time.

The other five teams ITB United, Mixed United, Royal Brunei Air Force and Masters V are invited by the organisers.

Playing in the league system, each team will meet each other twice in a home and away format.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams at the end of the season. Other awards include the Best Player, Best Goalkeeper and Top Scorer.

To be held at the Hockey Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas, Masters V will go up against Mixed United in the opener next Friday at 4pm.

The next match will see Temburong take on Brunei-Muara at 8pm.
